Introduction to the Cruising Club of Virginia

The Cruising Club of Virginia Inc. (CCV) is a southern Chesapeake Bay sailing organization that offers a full season of sailing programs which includes racing, workshops, and social activities. Through the promotion and management of these spring through fall programs for the past 44 years, CCV has established itself as the major focal point for providing offshore handicap racing sailors a forum for organizing their respective fleet racing activities in the southern Chesapeake Bay. Through the efforts of many dedicated yachtsmen, CCV continues to establish and annually publish race management instructions for each sailing season in the annual CCV Racing Guide.

CCV membership is open to any sailing enthusiast who has a genuine interest in the sport and pleasure of sailing in any capacity, be it cruising, racing, crewing, or race committee participant. Membership in CCV provides affiliation with the Chesapeake Bay Yacht Racing Association (CBYRA) of which CCV is a member club. CCV, a non-profit organization, establishes yearly membership dues for payment by all of its members and an annual racing fee which is paid by those members interested in participating in the racing program. CCV sponsors thirteen (13) CBYRA sanctioned races for which an annual and perpetual awards program is funded by the racing fees. CCV also sponsors seminars in race management for race committees, basic racing rules for the racing sailors, a spring crew training program, and a one-day course for new-to-racing skippers.

Historical Tidbits

  • CCV was started in 1964 by those wishing to race under the Cruising Class of America (CCA) rules and grew out of the Delta Cruising Class when the Delta bylaws were changed and adopted.
  • At the time reasonable dues for club affiliation and a nondiscriminatory membership policy opened the way for sailors who were previously ineligible to participate in sailboat races. For those without other club affiliation, CCV is the only organized connection with local yacht racing.
  • Rudy Lotz was elected the first commodore in 1965. Reportedly, a prominent yachtsman from the northern Bay area expressed concern that dues of only $1.50 would allow riffraff into yachting. Commodore Lotz, or Admiral Lotz as he preferred to be called, replied that dues of $1.00 had originally been proposed, but had been raised to $1.50 and they hadn’t had a bit of trouble.
  • An early memo inviting membership states that the club would also, “provide a nucleus for the social affairs which enables us to see our sailing friends with their clothes on”.
  • During the course of CCV’s existent we have organized racing in each of the following classes: CCA, Delta, IOR, MORC, J-24 and PHRF.
  • In 1975 Tommy Thompson began the CCV Racing Guide and along with a yearly rules clinic, race committee manual, race management seminar, and common set of sailing instructions resulted in CCV becoming the administrative body of the southern Chesapeake Bay.
